Late Night Thoughts

It's not very often that I am unable to sleep, in fact usually I can sleep any time, anywhere. I am just a good sleeper. Usually. Every once in a while thoughts get too loud and life seems far too big and unknown to simply fall asleep. Tonight is one of those nights apparently.

Tonight I think loudly about my son who is growing up so fast. It feels as if he was my little boy and somehow I took too long when blinking and opened my eyes to find a teenager looking back at me. I do not often pause to take notice of the time passing quickly. Usually I am so caught up in day to day life that I forget to stop and take it all in. When I do I see that the precious moments that I hold dear are quickly being turned into memories and sometimes this breaks my heart, just a little.

At this point in my parenting life I cherish the moments that my son uses his imagination and plays with his toys. These moments come less and less frequently and I know that one day, very soon unfortunately, will come to an end.  My little boy is turning into a man and I know that this is a good thing. I know that the time is coming to put away the toys but every day I cross my fingers and hope. Please not today. Today be my little boy. Growing up and responsibility is waiting but it can wait a little longer.

I worry about what his teenage years will hold for him. It hurts my heart to think he's not far away from his first heartbreak. I know that it's all part of life and growing up but he's my little boy and I just want to protect him from all the sharp things in life. The mistakes, the disappointments and all the things that leave a mark. I am excited for his journey and that he has so much ahead of him but sometimes I look at him and see my baby and want so badly to protect him.

Being a mom is hard. Sometimes you even lose sleep because the worries get loud. I love my little man and am so proud of who he is growing up to be.
